Joanne Grana Square

Here’s our Q&A with Joanne Grana, the woman behind The Confessions of a Disabled Diva and author of The Busy World Of Bianca Bear. Joanne looks forward to participating in Disability Awareness Day next month, but first she will read a special story about her beloved mother who meant the world to her. And we could not be more proud to have Joanne in our show!

What inspired you to audition for LTYM?

I submitted an essay to Listen To Your Mother because I thought it was a good way to pay tribute to my mother and thank her for all the things she did for me. She made sure I had a great life. I wanted people to know that.

What’s the craziest piece of advice your mother or a mother gave you?

It is not really advice, but she always told me I was just as good as everyone else. It didn’t matter that I was disabled. I could do anything I put my mind to.

How would you describe yourself as a writer?

I think about what I am going to write for a long time before actually sitting at my laptop. I write articles and stories in my head first then type them out. I am a writer who is into details.

Salty or sweet? What’s your favorite snack to splurge on?

I like both salty and sweet. Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia, Jillly’s Cupcakes Chocolate Thunder, and pretzels, are some of my favorites.
