by Ellie on April 6, 2015

Today we feature cast member Kelly Suellentrop, an author, illustrator, blogger and mom with a wicked sense of humor.

What inspired you to audition for LTYM?

I read Hannah Mayer’s blog, Skidmarking, and saw that she was a member of the 2013 cast. I had never heard of LTYM before, so I checked out the webpage, watched some of the videos, and thought, “Hey! I’m a mom. I do mom stuff. I’m totally on board with this.” And I didn’t even KNOW about the free shoes. But seriously, I loved listening to the different stories, and just got this feeling it was something I wanted to be a part of.

What’s the craziest piece of advice your mother or a mother gave you?

I once had a lactation consultant tell me that the reason my newborn son was having a little trouble latching was because he didn’t know he was born yet, thanks to my “non-natural” C-section. According to her, I needed to “convince him he was born,” to which my husband shouted, “Hey, Michael! You’re born! Did that do it?” She was thinking more along the lines of me turning my hospital room into a nudist colony and leaving my son on my bare chest AT ALL TIMES, but I’m pretty sure my husband’s FYI did the trick.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve said to your kids?

Well, I speak and sing nonsense things to my kids on a daily basis. They are going to grow up and one day have that moment when they look at each other and say, “Remember when mom used to say things like Let’s kick it, spigot? That was weird.” But the craziest was probably  a multi-level, spontaneously orchestrated lie devised by me and my husband to keep my daughter believing in Santa Claus for one more year. It’s a long story, but it involved email, a carefully timed router power failure, and Canada.

Quick…ask the child closest (in proximity, of course) to you to describe you in 10 words or less. What did they say?

My 6-year-old son said: “Really snugglish. You love me and Grace. You help us whenwegethurt.” (I was instructed by him to smash those last four words into one in order to stay within the requirement.)

How would you describe yourself as a writer?

I write the way I talk, only I never sound as good when I’m actually talking. My writing is like having a conversation with me without all the ums, ten second stumbles while I try to remember what word I’m looking to use, and cussing. I don’t cuss THAT much when I talk, but I am much less brave about committing foul language to print…at least without a few special characters to take the edge off. Every time I compose something, I want there to be at least one moment that makes the reader laugh, even if it is a serious piece. If I can make someone laugh AND cry in the same work, I secretly do a little fist pump.

Salty or sweet? What’s your favorite snack to splurge on?

I’m a no limits kind of gal, so I like them both together. That’s not true, I do totally love limits. But it makes me sound bad ass (apparently ass isn’t a cuss word) to say I’m a no limits gal, and it gives me an excuse to not make a decision. Decisions I hate. As far as snacks go, I could eat cheese and crackers all day long. So guess that gives salty an edge?

Now I’m blushing. The nice thing about the internet is you can’t see it.

Loved learning some new things about you! This show is totally you–story writer and teller extraordinaire!! Performing on stage? Well that is the icing on the cake. All of your starring roles in Villa skits has given you plenty of practice! Do they know about your smooth Michael Jackson moves? Maybe you can work them into the show:) xo
