It’s A Wrap, St. Louis!

Giving Mother’s Day a microphone.

Last Saturday, the day before Mother’s Day, LTYM STL took the stage for the second year in a row at St. Luke’s, and we gave it our all. We shared our stories about our moms, ourselves, our children, our fears, our dreams, our childhoods, our future, and yes, even our grannie panties. What can I say? We let it all hang out. Through our words we connected with the audience, who laughed out loud and wiped tears with the tissues we provided (just in case).

Curtain call with red roses in hand.

This year we received an unprecedented number of submissions, and we auditioned 40 men and women. In the end, we put together a cast of 15 speakers who represented the intricate tapestry of motherhood. Some of them pee-in-your pants funny. Some of them heartbreaking. All of them brave.

Our stories, which resonated with others in the audience, were about:

A single mom’s hilarious adventure in the sperm bank.

A sister’s tragic death that left a legacy of motherhood.

A teen mom who gave up her baby for adoption only to receive the surprise of her life 21 years later.

A mom’s honest, inspiring experience about raising a transgender son that has changed lives.

Deb speaks about her transgender son.

A mom who traveled to Uganda and faced a corrupt orphanage and was forced to return home without one of her sons.

Another mom who put the missing puzzle pieces together after discovering her biological mom committed suicide.

A priceless account of how children don’t fall far from the tree when it comes to saying the most outrageous things.

Laura brings down the house, hysterically funny!

A journey of infertility and natural childbirth that melts the heart.

Rhianna crafts words about the blessings of childbirth.

A foster mom who adopted two lonely children and gave them a family to call their own.

And more…

A mom shares the humorous advantages of having children after age 40.

A hysterical confession about how one woman would never turn out to be like her own mom. (never say never).

A special Mother’s Day gift to always remember.

A premie whose broken leg saved her life.

A daughter who talks to dead people and makes us smile from ear to ear.

A mother’s love in a laundromat.

And, my own version of why a mom’s best friend is a dog.

This is the second year in a row that I have met a group of kind, sweet and ‘oh so talented’ women who had a story to tell and did it so eloquently.
I hope to be life-long friends with all of these women. It’s been such a blessing
in my life.

Another wonderful season with new stories that we shared. I had a blast! I especially loved the audience members and it was great to hear several women tell me that they plan on coming every year. This truly is a Mother’s Day celebration and new tradition! Here’s looking forward to 2015!

It was a hoot. It was bittersweet (because it’s now over). It was heartwarming (and heart-wrenching) to hear everyone’s stories. Thanks, Naomi, Laura and Ellie.
