Meet The Cast! Candy and Dolores

by elaine on March 31, 2014

This post comes on the heels of us all being together for our first read-through this past weekend (minus Monica, we missed you girl) and it was SO amazing to hear everyone’s story all together.  I am humbled that I get to share this with Jennifer and my fellow cast-mates.

Today I feature two more of the ladies that comprise our stellar cast.  We are getting more and more excited each day, as we learn more about each person in our line-up and think of their wonderful words…

Candy Mickels Mejia is a wife, mother, sister, and daughter making it up as she goes along.

Candy writes for her own blog Slightly Overcaffeinated, which covers topics from parenting to mom fashion to mid-life angst, and has been featured on BlogHer. She studied Theatre and Communications at University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas (and would bet this is the first time you’ve heard of that college). Candy has lived in nine states and moved way more than nine times and has decided she’s not moving again unless it’s to Costa Rica.

When she’s not trying to decide what’s for dinner or trying to make her daughters laugh, you can find Candy running (that half marathon isn’t going to train for itself) or reading her latest impulse buy on her new fangled e-reader.

When I asked Candy how she found out about Listen To Your Mother this is what she said:
“I found out about the show through BlogHer. As someone with a blog, obviously BlogHer is a resource I use often and when I first read about Listen to Your Mother, I thought: “Wow. How cool it must be to be a part of something like that.” But there were no shows near me, so it just sat at the back of my mind. I watched many of the videos online and admired the cast members for their courage and storytelling skills. Even if I couldn’t be part of a show, to hear their stories was so valuable – it really just solidified for me what a privilege it must be to be a part of something so special.

And how she feels about being in the show…
Now that I’m actually a cast member… It’s hard to even know how to feel! To actually be in Listen to Your Mother, for me means that I get to be part of what is becoming a great storytelling tradition. It means I get to be part of an event that honors women who make the world go ’round. It means my daughters get to see me in a whole new light — and hopefully it will influence how they see themselves (and future selves) as well.”

Dolores Mitchell is an accountant who recently retired to pursue her childhood love of writing.  She is the mother of two, grandmother of one adorable granddaughter and married 33 years to her soul mate.  She published her first children’s book in 2011 titled “Why Am I Here?” which tells children why they are special.  Her book was a USA Best Book Awards finalist in 2012.  She is currently working on two other children’s books to be published in 2014.

First I asked Dolores how she found out about LTYM:

I received an email about LTYM from the Houston Writers Guild’s president (Pamela who is also a cast member).  Normally, I would delete any unknown emails, but the caption “Listen to Your Mother” caught my attention.  I thought to myself, “Now is the time to step out from behind the shadows and share my words.  I had a great time meeting everyone in the cast last weekend.”

I also asked Dolores what it means to her to be in the show:

I feel honored and privileged to be selected as one of the cast members of the LTYM Southeast TX performance. I was blessed with over 50 years with my mother and she was a constant inspiration to me as she shared her life stories during our intimate visits. The story about my mother and her strong faith was written to encourage others on this Christian journey.  The story will forever be timeless. My mother would be so proud that her story is being told.
