Come Together: Our First Rehearsal With the 2017 Cast!

March 24, 2017

After a year of planning, booking the event space, spreading the word about submissions, holding auditions and selecting the cast comes my favorite part of the whole process, the first rehearsal! When the voices of 11 stories come together from Oakland, San Francisco, Sacramento, Berkley, and Mill Valley and meet for the first time. Come together right now over cheese and chocolate. Come together right now over my story and your story and her story. Come together over laughter and tears, smiles and silence. Come together over motherhood: the beauty and the beast. Last Sunday, we met at The Hivery, a collaborative and creative coworking space where women can pursue their work, passions, ideas and what’s next. The Hivery is a major sponsor of Listen To Your Mother and we can’t thank Grace, the Founder, enough for providing such a beautiful coming together space. On Saturday, May 13th at 7:00pm, I hope you’ll come […]

Our 2017 Charitable Cause: The Homeless Prenatal Program

March 17, 2017

The local charitable cause that LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER San Francisco selected for our 2017 show is the Homeless Prenatal Program! We are proud to donate a portion of the show’s proceeds to this important organization.   Selecting a charity that benefits mothers and children from the hundreds of worthy organizations in the Bay Area is a truly daunting task, but the more we learned about the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP), the more Janine and I knew that this was the organization for LTYM San Francisco’s charitable cause. There is nothing complicated or mystifying about HPP, the power of this program is the simplicity of its mission: to break the cycle of childhood poverty through partnership with families: “By seizing the motivational opportunity created by pregnancy and parenthood, HPP joins with families to help them recognize their strengths and trust in their capacity to transform their lives.” More On the Homeless Prenatal Program HPP proudly states that […]

San Francisco Has A Cast!

March 13, 2017

After three days of auditions all over the Bay Area, LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER San Francisco 2017 has a cast! We listened to people share a piece of themselves in San Francisco… In Oakland, with space provided by our sponsor, DanSpace… and wrapping it up at space provided by our sponsor, The Hivery, in Mill Valley… I don’t know what it was about the 2017 auditions, but they were magical. My entire team felt it – can you tell in the photos? We loved every single second of the funny, the heart-breaking, the relatable. Mary, Janine and I were touched to the core by each story and the courage of our readers to stand before us and find their voice. Of course, when the auditions ended, the true work began. With a showtime of only 90 minutes and 11 cast spots available, the only thing that got us through the selection process was […]

Thoughts on Casting

February 27, 2017

This Saturday we’ll go to the main branch of the San Francisco public library for our first of three days of auditions. Did we remember to bring a copy of last year’s program for the people waiting their turn to audition? Did we bring a copy of the Listen To Your Mother anthology? (And will the library try to re-shelve it the way they did last year?) It marks one of my favorite parts of the Listen To Your Mother season. When the auditioners come—who are often but not always women and often but not always mothers—we sit and we listen. Each story stands on its own—each one a shining star, beating, glowing, vibrating. Something started out as an idea, a image, a conflict, something that kept nudging its way in someone’s brain until that person put it on paper to give it life and then chose to share it with us. For me, it’s like […]

Audition Day! Harriet’s Story

February 21, 2017

Submissions are officially closed and LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER San Francisco is rolling ahead to our  auditions in Oakland, Mill Valley and San Francisco! Janine, Mary and I were blown away by the quality of essays this year. Thank you to everyone who bared a piece of their soul and please believe me when I say that each and every story was recognized and appreciated. As always, it was very difficult culling it down to the next level of auditions. For those of you getting ready to read your work aloud to us, no doubt you’re feeling excited, nervous, jittery. Maybe even terrified. A little sick to your stomach. We get it. It’s one thing to reveal yourself on paper and it’s another to give life to it with your voice. Harriet Heydemann, one of our talented 2016 cast members, shares her audition day experience with us – and how her lucky charm […]
