The local charitable cause that LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER San Francisco selected for our 2017 show is the Homeless Prenatal Program! We are proud to donate a portion of the show’s proceeds to this important organization.
Selecting a charity that benefits mothers and children from the hundreds of worthy organizations in the Bay Area is a truly daunting task, but the more we learned about the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP), the more Janine and I knew that this was the organization for LTYM San Francisco’s charitable cause.
There is nothing complicated or mystifying about HPP, the power of this program is the simplicity of its mission: to break the cycle of childhood poverty through partnership with families: “By seizing the motivational opportunity created by pregnancy and parenthood, HPP joins with families to help them recognize their strengths and trust in their capacity to transform their lives.”
More On the Homeless Prenatal Program
HPP proudly states that no family is ever turned away. This organization not only serves the homeless, they help anyone that can benefit from their services, as long as that family has a child 17 years or younger. This organization is deeply committed to their clients, stating:
- We believe that people can change and they want a better life for themselves and their children.
- Every mother wants to deliver a healthy baby and become a good parent.
- HPP honors diversity ands respects the culture and dignity of each family.
Uniquely, the Homeless Prenatal Program holds themselves to the highest of standards, “addressing the larger issues in society to create change” by fighting “racism, poverty, sexism and homophobia and all forms of oppression.” Not only this, but HPP invests in the community they serve by “hiring and training individuals from the target population.”
Most impressive of all, however, is that the philosophy of the Homeless Prenatal Program translates into tangible individual and community successes:
“Many of our successes are quantifiable. For example, more than 90% of children born to HPP clients are born healthy (of normal weight and drug free). More than 80% of our Community Health Worker Training Program participants graduate, and more than 90% of the graduates secure meaningful, family-sustaining jobs in community based organizations within 30 days. In addition, more than 400 families each year are able to obtain permanent housing with our assistance.”
LTYM’s mission includes supporting parents and communities in both creative and tangible ways. The benefits of LTYM reach beyond the audience and cast, with a portion of the proceeds from all nationwide 2017 productions going to local community charitable causes supporting mothers and families.
