Cast Spotlight: Tamara Reese

by stephaniejankowski on May 5, 2015

TamaraUpon learning her husband matched for residency in Pittsburgh, Tamara Reese is pretty sure she sobbed into their first son’s 10-week-old little head. But here she is five years later, a full-on Pirates fan and parallel parking WIZARD! She spends much of her time learning how to mother in this beautiful city; most of her parenting strategies are Daniel Tiger songs. She now has two boys and a baby girl who take up most of her mind space (full hands, full heart), but in her “free time” she is a consultant in the field of Maternal and Child Health and a contributing editor to Kveller.com, a website with a Jewish twist on parenting.

What we love about Tamara is her affinity for a well-placed curse word, nothing but the honest to goodness truth spewing from her, and her ability to make people feel with her writing. She claims she never took a formal how-to course, and only began writing when she got married, but we call shenanigans. That kind of talent has to be honed, right?!

*hysterical laughter*

I think we all know motherhood is the best “course” there is. And Tamara graduated with honors.

Q: How did you discover LTYM?

A: I have several writer-friends who have performed in LTYM show’s across the country. I have been truly inspired by so many of their stories. Writing is a therapeutic medium and just the act of putting the words down on paper takes bravery – but submitting them for others read really takes guts. The part about LTYM that really moves me is using our own voices to tell our story. I’m beyond excited to be part of it.

Q: What is one of your favorite things you’ve ever written?

A: My favorite thing I’ve ever written is #YouAreAGoodMama (found HERE) because it is the very essence of what I believe a community of mothers should do for one another. Since having my third, strangers approach me all the time and comment on my mothering – the supportive comments fuel my soul (the negative ones make me want to punch someone).

Q: What do you wish most for your children?

A: I want them to grow up to be close friends with one another. If I do anything as a mother, I hope I can raise them to love and rely on each other for a lifetime.

Q: If you could only ever eat at one restaurant in the ‘Burgh, what would it be and why?

A: We eat a Burgatory Bar a lot – so probably there because BEST.BURGERS.EVER. — If I had to take one food to a desert island and eat it for all eternity, then the answer is lasagna from Piccolo Forno.

Q: If you were mayor of Pittsburgh for a day, what law would you enact/change/do away with and why?

A: I’ve seen a cop wave someone on for a Pittsburgh left. I just CANNOT with the Pittsburgh left. (runners up: federal offense for using the words ‘slippy’ or ‘nebby’) Editors’ note: Slippy. NO. Just, no.

Tamara’s work has also been featured here in Brain, Child; New Beginnings; and Pittsburgh Post GazetteFollow her on Twitter for a daily dose of awesome, and don’t forget to check back in with her after her performance on Friday!
