Listen To Your Mother Metro Detroit cast

1. Who is your favorite TV mom and why?

I love 2 of the mothers in the movie Spanglish. I know it’s not a TV show, but all I could think of was Marie Barone from Everyone Loves Raymond.
I love Flor because she is the epitome of motherhood. She strives for a better life for her daughter. She is compassionate toward the daughter of her employers, who desperately needs positive attention and mothering.
I love Evelyn (played by Cloris Leachman) because she is a loving mother, but she is also realistic about the life her daughter leads. She quietly observes her daughter’s mistakes and jumps on the chance to help when her daughter finally turns to her.

2. Do you have a favorite quotation, book, author, or artist? Who or what is it?

“Not all who wander are lost.”

– J.R.R. Tolkien.

I love that quote and keep it in mind as I watch my children and students find their paths to their happiness. My all-time favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird. I imagine I’ve read this book at least 15 times.  Atticus Finch is the best parent EVER.

3. What is your favorite room in your house and why?

I love my deck in the summertime. It is the gathering place for family and friends. Many hours are spent under the pergola enjoying each other’s company and the relief the pool provides on hot days.  The deck around the pool is crowded with potted palms, sweet smelling flowers and herbs that deliciously scent the air when the sun hits them.

4. What is your favorite location in Michigan?

Any beach town on Lake Michigan is A-OK with me, but I’m partial to Pentwater. We have spent many family and extended family vacations there. As a matter of fact, we are having a reunion of sorts in Pentwater this July.

5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received from your mother or a mother figure?

You can have anything you want, but you can’t have everything you want.
This quote has helped me and hopefully my children learn to put things in perspective and prioritize.

This is the heartwarming story of a little girl who wanted to be a cowboy but grew up to be a teacher. She began her life on Oct. 31 in the town of Teaneck, New Jersey, the youngest of three girls.

As time went on, she moved to California and then to Michigan, where she eventually settled down after attending 12 different schools. Diane is currently teaching her 24th year at Flat Rock High School.

She has three children named Jackson, Ashleigh and Alex. While her children attended college, she earned her Master’s Degree in Technology. She now gets to spoil her beautiful grand-daughters Zoe, Imogen and Evelyn in her spare time.

Diane dedicates today to John – without his encouragement and never-ending support none of this would have been possible — and to her sister, Cindy, who was her co-passenger on this wild ride.

And Erin… you still inspire me!

Join us at Saint Andrew’s Hall on April 26 to hear Diane — and the rest of the Metro Detroit cast of Listen To Your Mother Show 2015 — share a reading on motherhood.
