What’s Your Story?

by Kate on March 12, 2013

On Saturday, March 9, our diverse cast traveled from DC, Northern Virginia, West Virginia, Baltimore and other areas of Maryland to gather for a full group rehearsal. It was our first opportunity to hear all of the readings together as a show from start to finish. But really it was chance to sit around, eat an excellent meal prepared by our host, Lara DiPaola and talk about…well, everything.

One cast member was assumed to be “quiet” earlier in the evening and then had everyone dying of laughter as she told hilarious stories about her mother. Another claimed that she must have THE most embarrassing story in the show…until she heard one of the others. Another laughed and chatted when she arrived, then reduced us all to a communal puddle of tears, while telling her story about an unbearable loss. And so on…

And that – THAT – is exactly what makes Listen to Your Mother this incredible barrier breaking experience. You think you know someone…that friendly lady at the grocery store, that perfect PTA mom, that guy glued to his iPhone in the middle of a party… But then you realize that you don’t. You don’t know ANYTHING. These people you so casually define or dismiss have other stories to tell. Ones that might surprise you – shock you, even. Ones that might make you realize just how hard they fight to present that put together exterior. Ones that make you think. Ones that make you want to be kinder. More compassionate. Less judgmental.

I don’t want to give anything away about the DC show this year, but I can tell you that you will laugh, cry, think and leave wanting more.

These are the faces of the 2013 Listen to Your Mother Cast:

Think you know their story?

You have no idea…

What a fantastic way to introduce what I know will be an amazing cast. Wishing there was a way to attend all of the shows in all of the places….

Love this. SO TRUE. It’s exactly what I think, what I thought, after hearing out auditions. We have no idea..

Someone read, the initial vibe was one of unapproachability. I heard her story: she is just overwhelmed.

This is what it’s all about and what LTYM promotes: awareness. Be aware of other people. Don’t be so quick to assume or conclude, because just like you, even the rude man on the bus has a story he may be keeping inside. That story deserves to be heard, to have witnesses. I am grateful to be a part of this, to be able and WILLING to simply…listen.
