Spotlight on Chicago’s Donation Recipient: The Red Pump Project

by Tracey on April 27, 2015

Over the past 3 years, we have had the privilege to not only bring 3 fantastic shows to the stage, but to donate substantial amounts to local organizations that hold places in our hearts.

Bright Pink, Greater Chicago Food Depository, and Recovery on Water were charities that meant something special to Melisa and me.

This year’s donation recipient is just as special. We cannot wait to donate 10% of our ticket proceeds to the Chicago branch of The Red Pump Project!

From their site:

“The Red Pump Project® is a nonprofit organization raising awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. We empower, educate, and motivate action by boldly driving conversation online and offline around HIV prevention and issues related to sexual and reproductive health. The Red Pump serves as a symbol of empowerment representing the strength and courage of women affected by HIV/AIDS.”

RedPumpLogoSince 2009, when co-founders Luvvie Ajayi and Karyn (Brianne) Watkins started a social media campaign to raise awareness, The Red Pump Project has grown in leaps and bounds. They currently have official ambassadors in Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas and DC and a social media following of over 10,000 (and growing!). I encourage you to browse their website; I especially appreciate the blog posts where honest information is given on topics that some may consider “embarrassing.” Different types of birth control are discussed at length with their effectiveness rates and misconceptions. You will find personal stories written by women who are living with HIV/AIDS and be moved as they share their experiences and challenges which are touching and REAL. The goal is to destigmatize the conversation and illuminate the power that women can have over their own reproductive and sexual health.

Chicagoans who are interested in what events and services The Red Pump Project can provide need only to look at their website for information on Chicago’s calendar.

Karyn and Luvvie say it so well on the Chicago page:

“Determined to combine our love of shoes with our passion for fighting HIV/AIDS, we launched The Red Pump Project. Over the years, we have been blessed to meet and gain the support of so many individuals and organizations committed to fighting the epidemic in communities across the country. However, Chicago is where we call home and it is where our organization was born. While our city has seen some progress in the fight against HIV, there is still plenty of work to be done. We continue to educate ourselves – and each community – in settings free of stigma and shame. We hope that you will join us in this journey and look forward to seeing you at a future event.”

We are incredibly honored that Luvvie Ajayi (aka Awesomely Luvvie) and Karyn Watkins will be attending the Chicago LTYM show on Sunday. Luvvie will speak about their non-profit and volunteers will be available to answer questions and share information about their fabulous organization. Join us as we celebrate Motherhood on stage and lift up their organization in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Tickets for the 2:00 show on May 3rd at the Athenaeum can be found HERE.
