You Don’t Even Have To Be A Mom!

by Melisa on January 11, 2014

Even though we always make sure to say that LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER is open to everyone who is a mom or has had a mom (that pretty much covers everybody!), one of the misconceptions of the LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER movement is that you have to be a mom in order to be in a show.

No, no, no, no.

Not at all!

In fact, we LOVE to hear stories from non-moms! Examples, just to name a few, are stories:

~ By women who are non-moms by choice (Why did you make that decision? Tell us stories about how people react to you, or how you feel now: regrets or no? What do you love/what drives you crazy about your mom friends?)

~ By women who aren’t moms yet, for whatever reason (What kind of mom do you hope to be? Do you have fears about conceiving or mothering? Are you struggling with infertility?)

~ (Though technically not non-moms…!) By women who put their kids up for adoption (How did you make that decision? How does that decision affect your life now?)

~ By men (Tell us about your mom. Tell us about how your wife mothers the kids. We love the male perspective!)

These are just a few examples, and we know there are millions–yes, millions!!–of stories like these out there. Truth be told, these kinds of stories add invaluable richness and diversity to the LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER playlist, and those of us who are producing and directing hunger for them because of their different perspectives.

If you’d like to see some examples of stories that are NOT about mothering one’s own children, check out Lou and Nancy from Chicago’s 2012 show (audio is very quiet: you’ll have to crank up the volume!), Jocelyn from Chicago’s 2013 show, and Adam from Northwest Indiana’s 2011 show. There are lots more, but I am too lazy to look for them at the moment, to be honest.

So, if you can contribute a non-mom perspective, start your engines! We’re waiting for you.
