And So, We Deliberate.

by admin on February 11, 2013

It was an incredible weekend, full of every single emotion imaginable.

It was audition weekend, and through all of our excitement to finally watch, hear, and feel the submissions have life breathed into them by their creators, Tracey and I forgot about the hard part: having to make decisions.

I mean, naturally we knew that we were going to need to make tough choices; what we forgot (or repressed, from last year) was HOW HARD it would be.

You can’t even imagine.

The wonderful news, something we expected but in a way were still surprised by, is that CHICAGO BROUGHT IT. Chicago is the Second City? Pshaw. Chicago is a First Class, talented town. This year’s show is going to be spectacular. That was the great news.

The terrible news is that we have had to put lovely, beautiful, heartfelt, well-written, awesome essays into the “no” folder. The amount of talent that we are having to let go is staggering. We quite literally could have cast two shows, or one three-hour show, neither of which is an option.

And so, we deliberate. We are making really painful cuts from what we received in order to select the best possible combination of essays for the show, and while we’re so excited to celebrate our 2013 cast when we finalize it this week, we also know that so many will be disappointed. And to those people we offer this:

Please know that if you end up not being selected for the cast this year, it doesn’t necessarily mean there was anything wrong with your submission. Every essay was discussed at length, re-read, and considered very carefully. It was with heavy hearts that we put gorgeous, perfectly fine essays into that “no” folder. If you aren’t selected, we hope that you’ll continue on this journey with us, either as an audience member or as an auditionee again next year: preferably both!

We expect to announce our cast at the end of this week or beginning of next. Stay tuned.

By the way, Tracey wrote a post on her personal blog that elaborates a little bit more. You can read it HERE.

As I said in my comment on Tracey’s blog entry, which easily applies to what you wrote here:

Thank you for this. I don’t know which folder I ended up in, but I am grateful for the opportunity to audition either way. I really appreciate you giving us a window into your and Tracey’s world right now, as all of us who put ourselves out there to you both did this weekend. I can’t speak for everyone else who is waiting to hear the news, but reading how you felt after your experience this weekend helps me to make peace with how I feel.

In all seriousness, I do not envy this portion of the event for you guys. Good luck & know that everyone appreciates the time & energy it takes to put this program together.

What Kathy said! (Unless it puts me in the “No” folder.)
