LTYM Chicago’s Having An Exciting Week!

by admin on February 7, 2013

Though on the surface (the “surface” being this blog) we have been quiet since our venue announcement last week, Tracey and I have been working very, very hard behind the scenes–where “quiet” is not a part of the vocabulary–and I’m happy to report that things are going swimmingly. This week is an exciting one: we just got confirmation on a third local sponsor (more on that in a minute!) AND we have our auditions this weekend.

Auditions are right near the top of the “Best Things About Producing A LTYM Show” list. On one hand the audition process is like opening a bunch of birthday/Christmas/Hanukkah presents: it makes us giddy to hear everyone’s essay come to life right in front of us. On the other hand, the audition process is a sobering thing because Tracey and I sit there in awe, honored and humbled that the people auditioning trust us to hear their very personal stories, some which are being spoken out loud for the very first time EVER.

In fact, it’s very much like “You got your chocolate in my peanut butter!” So much good stuff, all mixed together. But zero calories, so that’s a bonus!

In the days after auditions, Tracey and I will huddle up with our notes and begin to make our casting decisions: we hope to be able to announce Chicago’s 2013 cast right here on the blog by this time next week.

In local sponsor news, we are over-the-moon excited about the three companies (so far!) that have climbed on board the Chicago LTYM train with us. Their support is literally bringing the show to the Athenaeum stage, and we couldn’t be more thankful for their involvement.

First, Building Blocks Toy Stores. Hurray! Owner Katherine McHenry runs this amazing, family-oriented business that has two locations: Lakeview and Wicker Park. Building Blocks carries an awesome selection of specialty toys for all ages, from brands like Melissa & Doug, Plan Toys, LEGO, Gund, Ravensburger, Green Toys, Educo, and more. Katherine is serious about the fun of toys AND connecting with her customers, making Building Blocks a community treasure. Building Blocks was a 2012 local sponsor, and we are so happy to partner with Katherine and her crew again this year!

Chalet in Wilmette is a Nursery/Garden Center/Landscape store that is truly magical. I was there before the holidays and walked around with my chin dragging on the floor because I’ve never seen a place quite like it. They have everything–EVERYTHING!!!–you need to transform your garden into something your neighbors will envy as well as plenty of choices for your indoor plants, and much more. Chalet staffs more Illinois Certified Nursery Professionals than any other place, and I can tell you from personal experience that Educator Jennifer Brennan teaches a most awesome container class. Thanks to Chalet for supporting our 2013 show!

Our third (so far!) local sponsor is KeyLime Cove Indoor Waterpark Resort in Gurnee. KeyLime Cove is a great place for Chicago families to go when they need a little getaway, especially in the middle of winter, you know? But really ALL YEAR ROUND. My family has been there many times and we make full use of the on-site eateries, the variety of gift shops, the arcade, and of course, the indoor waterpark, which has one of these:

(That’s actually my son, nearly five years ago.)

SO much fun to be had a KeyLime Cove, and we look forward to telling you more about it in the next couple of months. Thanks to KeyLime Cove for joining us: yay!

Well, that’s where we’re at! Keep your eyes on this space for that cast announcement next week, and don’t forget to pencil us in on Sunday May 5 at 2 p.m. Tickets will go on sale at the end of February!
