2013 Chicago Call for Submissions

by admin on December 18, 2012

We are ready for your pieces!

If you would like to submit a piece about motherhood to be considered for the 2013 Chicago Listen To Your Mother Show, please follow the guidelines below so that Melisa and I are better able to navigate through them.

1. In the email subject line, include Title and Author name.

2. Please attach the written piece as a Word document with your name and and piece title on the first page.

3. Our email address is: ltymchicago@gmail.com

4. Confirmation of receipt emails will be sent out so that you do not need to worry if we have gotten your piece or not.

Melisa and I will be taking submissions until January 15. At that time, we will be crying and laughing and rejoicing over the words you have so beautifully crafted and deciding which ones we feel will be most appropriate to hear in this year’s auditions. We will let everyone know via email by January 24th if they have been selected for an audition. (FYI, the tentative date for auditions are Feb 9 and 10. You might want to pencil that on your calendar, Just In Case!!)

We have been asked multiple times what it is we are “looking” for this year and, to be honest, we won’t know until you send us something amazing! Be true to yourself and the message you feel most passionate about in regards to motherhood. If you find that humor from within the chaos represents your message best? Then make us laugh! If you are able to write and speak about motherhood with tenderness and wistfulness? Then make us cry! The show will represent all aspects of motherhood, and we need whatever trait you feel most accurately describes your experiences. (By the way, we like to publicize the show as PG-13 due to some mature topics. Anything with strong language will be edited for a wide audience: we want to put together a show that you can watch with your mom and grandma! And sisters! And husbands! And teens! You get the idea.) If you have any other questions regarding our requirements, you can reference our previous post or ask us in the comment section and we will answer immediately! Or you can watch the videos from last year’s show!

Please note that the 2013 show will be held in Chicago on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Be sure your calendar is open that day!!

Aaaaannnnddd…. GO!!

I LOVE this idea!

I think I’ll submitting the essay, “Why Do Homeschoolers Always Win the Ice Cream Cake?’

It’s got potential, no?

tracey December 27, 2012 at 3:28 pm

Because homeschoolers need extra ice cream to make it through the year. And wine. And duct tape.

Jennifer Evers December 18, 2012 at 11:02 am

I am sending my submission in before I lose my nerve.

Ann December 19, 2012 at 9:47 am

So exciting!

Jeanette Nyberg December 20, 2012 at 2:25 am

Oh, this is terrifying to me, so naturally I’d better throw on my big girl underpants and do it. Okay, off to write something witty.

tracey December 27, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Can’t wait, Jeanette!

Kathy December 27, 2012 at 12:33 pm

Yay! Fine tuning my piece and will be submitting it soon. 🙂

tracey December 27, 2012 at 3:27 pm

YAY backatcha, Kathy!

Is Metro Detroit too far for a submission? (I know part of LTYM is showcasing local writers.)

tracey December 28, 2012 at 8:43 am

Angela, We have auditions, 2 rehearsals and the show all in downtown Chicago. I would think that this would be too far for you to be able to commit to all of the times we would need you. There is a show in NW Indiana that may be closer to you. Check out the “Local Shows” tab and see if any of those locations are within reasonable driving distance. We aren’t opposed to anyone driving a little ways to get to perform in our show, but there is definitely a sense of community that we built last year that we would like to build again this year.

angela December 30, 2012 at 2:36 pm

Thanks Tracey. I think they’re about the same distance, but I understand your desire to keep it local. Thanks for responding.

Heather December 30, 2012 at 4:28 pm

What time will participants need to be present on May 5th, the day of the show?
Thanks!

tracey December 30, 2012 at 7:39 pm

Heather, the time hasn’t been announced yet, but with rehearsal and set up, you would need to be present from around 1 to 6… Maybe less? We would probably like to do a celebration afterwards as well. Also remember that we will have 2 rehearsals on other days (to be determined at a later date).

I use all Mac products and currently do not own a Microsoft Word – can it be sent via Google docs?

Melisa January 10, 2013 at 5:44 am

Hi Lisa,

Sure, that’s fine! If you don’t mind, after you share the doc with us, send a separate email that has your name and the title of your essay in the subject line, and in the body of the email type “Shared with you on Google Docs”. Thanks!

Mona January 10, 2013 at 10:03 am

Do you take submissions from out-of-state? I live in Michigan and there is no Detroit show.

Melisa January 16, 2013 at 7:18 am

Hi Mona!

I’m so sorry: totally missed your comment! Participants need to be local to each show because there are two required rehearsals in addition to the show itself. Hopefully someone from Detroit will apply to bring LTYM there very soon!

Erin Skibinski January 11, 2013 at 11:34 am

I am so excited to be submitting something! Thank you for this opportunity!

Melisa January 16, 2013 at 7:19 am

Thank you, for submitting! 🙂

I just saw this and I’m SOOOOOO sad I missed the deadline!! This is the first I’ve heard of “Listen to Your Mother” and I LOVE the idea! I plan to attend the show for sure with my mom and my daughters!
