Charleston, we did it! (The rest is still unwritten)

by Angie Mizzell on May 13, 2014

Charleston’s inaugural Listen To Your Mother show was a success! But… if I’ve learned anything as a first time director and producer, it was the very important message from National Director Ann Imig and New Cities Mentor Melisa Wells.

The gist of their pep talks was that “show day” would be much like a wedding… with so much hard work and so many emotions converging and washing over the production team and the cast. Melisa and Ann told us to remember to pause, and experience the moments.

There were SO MANY moments. I love how cast member Brandi Wolfe described it:

While backstage, waiting for my turn, I was soaking it all in. The voices on the other side of the curtain sharing their stories, the roaring laughter and energy of the audience, the love backstage, the historic theater where so many have performed, the church bells ringing right outside…

Footlight Players Theatre was an amazing venue, located in the heart of downtown Charleston. We snapped this cast photo in the courtyard just outside the backstage door.

An added treat: Jana Anthoine and Miranda Wicker, co-producers of Listen To Your Mother: Atlanta, drove down to see the show:

We’d like to thank Listen To Your Mother’s national sponsors, Chevrolet and BlogHer, who have done so much to support this 32-city movement.

Here in Charleston, we couldn’t have performed before packed houses in two back-to-back shows without the support of our generous local sponsors: Children’s Eye Specialists, Jody Mack Photography, Teacups and Trucks, Bonnie Compton, Parent Coach, Grace Salon and Spa, and local authors Andra Watkins and Teresa Bruce.

We extend our deepest gratitude to them, as well as to all of you who bought tickets and supported us in the audience with your laughter, your tears and your applause. 10% of those ticket sales will go directly to Postpartum Support Charleston.

Later this summer we’ll post the videos, so if you missed the show, you can watch each of the Charleston cast members read their true, original stories about motherhood. In the meantime, we leave you with this awesome behind-the-scenes slideshow, made by the amazing Jody Mack. And as the song playing in the background says, “the rest is still unwritten…”
