Charleston, it’s audition time!

by Angie Mizzell on February 26, 2014

Update: Auditions are complete. Click here to meet the cast.

On March 1, 2 and 3 we’ll hear the voices of 40 women and men who have signed up to audition for the Charleston production of Listen To Your Mother.

As a writer who constantly stands outside my life and watches it unfold, I understand how it feels to share the stories that bubble up in our hearts and minds. It’s one thing to hit publish on a blog post and share it via social media. But to speak those stories—to give them a voice by reading them out loud—is quite another.

It’s a big deal.

I love what NYC Director Amy Wilson has to say about Listen To Your Mother auditions:

“We’re casting a show of about twelve readers whose pieces will fit together in some kind of flow. Some will be funny, some sad, some both. But we have no preconceived notions going into auditions, no slots to fill or boxes we’re looking to check. The best thing you can do is show us what Deb Rox calls “the incredible youness of you.”

When I consider the task ahead—listening with open mind and ears—and then choosing the brave voices who will stand on the stage at the Footlight Players Theatre on May 4, I feel a sense of responsibility, indeed. But mostly, I feel honored.

Honored that I’ll get to hear all of them. Honored to be in the presence of so many people who are willing to put themselves out there. Thank you!

The Charleston production of Listen To Your Mother will be held on Sunday May 4, 2014 at the Footlight Players Theatre. Show times are at 2pm and 5pm. Get your tickets now!  10% of ticket proceeds benefit Postpartum Support Charleston.
