LTYM: Baton Rouge 2016 Recap!

May 6, 2016

We did it, y’all! Despite the most torrential downpour of rain and city-wide flooding, we had another amazing year of stories being shared, experiences being validated and a theatre of people cheering them on. I came into this year not knowing what to expect, half-worried that last year’s success was just a fluke and that we would never again be able to replicate that magic. But this cast brought it, the audience loved it, and once again, the power of story telling went to work. There were stories of loss, of grief, of hope, of overcoming. There were stories of strength, of courage, and even of kids peeing in public. There were stories that made our chests heave as tears poured and stories that made our stomachs hurt from laughing so hard. There were stories of legacy and of power and of acceptance. I am so very proud to have shared this stage with these […]

Local Sponsor: Supermusic

April 29, 2016

We are excited to welcome our Microphone Sponsor, Supermusic, as a local sponsor! Supermusic is owned by Lawrence Burges, who employs five instructors at two studios—one on Old Jefferson Highway and another in Bocage. Teachers are assigned to students based upon the instrument and openings they have at the time. They also look to see if the student and teacher have a good interaction together in lessons. They offer personal music lessons in piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, drums, violin, and voice at the beginner, intermediate, advanced, levels, for all ages. I asked Lawrence to tell me what he learned growing up that he uses as a music studio owner today. This is what he said: “My mother never let me give up. That is the biggest influence. My dad worked hard to pay for my music lessons and my uncle in California paid for my lessons too. That was the biggest […]

Director Spotlight: Meghan Matt

April 29, 2016

I have had the immense pleasure of introducing you to each of our cast members over the last several weeks, but today I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I first heard about Listen to Your Mother through a woman I met while I spent some time in Uganda. I later discovered another woman that I was part of a book project with was also affiliated with the show. When we lived in NYC I auditioned, and though I didn’t make it onto their cast, I knew I wanted in on this magic. Fast forward to two years ago, and I saw a post online about LTYM accepting applications for new cities. I went ahead and applied, assuming that I would never actually be chosen… But then I was, and I brought the show to Baton Rouge last year through a lot of blood, sweat and tears. I am […]

Cast Spotlight: Audrey Hayworth

April 26, 2016

I met Audrey last year when she auditioned for our inaugural Listen to Your Mother: Baton Rouge show. I loved her fiery energy that matched her amazing hair, but soon I realized she had incredible gifts that shine so bright they make her flaming red tresses look tame. Audrey is smart, hilarious, and has become such an important friend to me. When she joined me this year to create a partnership that could make LTYM: BR even better, I was beyond thrilled. She has added a massive amount of work, influence and dedication to this show, but I am most thankful for what she has added to my life personally. I love this woman and you will, too. Here’s Audrey. How did you hear about Listen to Your Mother? What made you decide to audition? I heard about LTYM from other writer friends, and then a local friend told me about the local […]

Local Sponsor: Guarantee Restoration Services

April 24, 2016

We are so excited to welcome Guarantee Restoration Services as a new local sponsor this year! Guarantee Restoration Services began in 1974 as a carpet cleaning business operated by William “Chunky” Folks and Ellen Folks out of their one-bedroom apartment in Baton Rouge. As Chunky’s carpet cleaning business expanded, so did the services their business provided. Chunky’s Guarantee Systems became known around Baton Rouge as the carpet, upholstery and flooring experts, and the company performed a variety of services such as carpet cleaning, repairs, stretching, dyeing, floor stripping and waxing as well as oriental and area rug cleaning. Soon Guarantee branched out into water damage emergency services and even fire damage cleaning. With fire damage cleaning came air duct cleaning services, which today has become an integral part of maintaining indoor air quality in residential and commercial buildings. Today, their company includes: Emergency Services: Water extraction, structural drying and dehumidification following water damage, removal […]
