LTYM Madison Cast: Meet Erika Wagner-Martin

by Ann on April 18, 2011

Erika lives in Wisconsin with her wife, Jenn, and their newly-adopted toddler and mini-toddler. She holds a master’s degree in counseling, an insane principal balance with the US Department of Education and, of course, wants to be a writer. She enjoys mellow indie music, deep talks, smart books, and when people agree with her. Erika blogs at ‘Be gay about it’ where, since 2007, she’s explored how the topics of equality, politics, adoption, and family intersect in her life.

It has been said that Erika writes in “sentences that sing”. Others have described her prose as “articulate”, “passionate”, and “high drama with terrific dialogue”. In January 2010, Erika launched ‘BGAI Together’, a grassroots storytelling project where LGBTQ persons and their Allies share stories of love and affirmation, making good on hours of daydreaming about a more compassionate world, complete with swelling strings, singing bluebirds and, of course, rainbows.

Erika was head-over-heels thrilled to be recognized as BlogHer of the Week in December 2009. In 2011, Erika and Jenn were selected from among thousands to be featured in the popular Youtube project-turned book It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living. Any day now, she anticipates receiving her author copy of her first published academic work, “Mental Health Counselors Addressing Intimate Partner Violence” in Foundations of Mental Health Counseling (4th ed). Erika’s writing has also been featured at Storybleed Magazine, BlogNosh magazine, DoubleSifted, Powder Room Graffiti, The Just Posts and IndieInk. Erika’s wife, especially, would love it if someone (anyone) would pay her for her ability to throw words together on the page.

We are so honored and proud to have Erika in the LTYM Madison cast! Come hear her read on Mother’s Day at The Barrymore! Have you bought your tickets?

I had the great joy of meeting Erika at the Madison rehearsals for LTYM. What I remember the most, is how eager and proud she was to show us pictures of her babies.

True mama pride.

Wonderful to meet you, Erika.
